The Dawning of the Day (Fáinne Geal an Lae)

The Dawning of the Day is often one of the first tunes taught to students of Irish music. The tune is that of an old Irish air from the 17th century – composed by harpist Thomas Connellan.
The lyrics of ‘On Raglan Road’, written by the county Monaghan poet Patrick Kavanagh, are set to an adapted version of the melody. The song was then popularized by the singing of Luke Kelly and the Dubliners.
In 2019, ‘On Raglan Road’ was selected as ‘Ireland’s Favorite Folk Song’ by public vote in an RTÉ TV contest.
