This set dance is traditionally played and danced to on St. Patrick’s Day – Ireland’s national holiday. St. Patrick is the patron saint of Ireland who brought Christianity to the Emerald Isle in the 5th century. He famously banished snakes from the land. Legend has it that to explain the concept of the Holy Trinity (God, the son and the Holy Spirit) he picked a shamrock growing nearby and pointed out that it while it had three leaves they were all interconnected to one stem. The shamrock was subsequently adopted as their emblem by Irish people.
